Originally a coal mining valley, when the last mine shut in 1970, The Afan Forest Park was designated a forest park in the 1972. The area cover48 square miles (120 square km).
As one of Britain’s best loved mountain bike destinations, trails for beginners to expert start from the visitor centre car park. There are also three hiking trails that start from the same location. These range from a short easy walk to a much more challenging seven mile walk with stunning views over the Afan Valley.
